For a very special SCGA Junior Girls Golf outing, the Discovery Cube in LA and OC welcomed 60 total girls from SCGA Junior’s five LPGA*USGA Girls Golf chapters over the past two Sundays. The afternoon was designed to get young girls excited about the intersection of science and golf through a unique blend of education and entertainment.
A central highlight of the day was an activity on the physics of golf, starting with a 30-minute presentation crafted by the educational programming team at the Discovery Cube that focused on the potential and kinetic energy brought about by a golf swing.
“I loved that the golf presentation featured photos of female golfers. Such an intentional choice.” Shared Coach Lauren, who joined the girls at the Los Angeles location.
The girls were engaged by a high energy, interactive presentation and then dove into hands-on activities that put their newfound knowledge to the test. They built and tested golf ball catapults, experimenting to see which device could send a golf ball flying the farthest and straightest, making complex scientific concepts accessible and fun.
Following the activity, the girls had the chance to explore the myriad of immersive exhibits at the Discovery Cube.
At the Orange County exhibit, the girls were especially enthralled by the Sea Lab, where they were able to touch stingrays and other ocean creatures. The head scientist emphasized how diverse the tidepool community is, just like the golf community!
Through an intentional afternoon filled with exploration, this outing was not just about learning; it was about empowerment. The kids left with a newfound appreciation for science and a deeper understanding of the mechanics of golf.
“This is a really great opportunity to continue to get our girls excited about playing sports and motivated to get back on the course.” Coach Lauren said. “Thank you so much to our Discovery Cube partners for supporting our program!”
