We sat down with SCGA Junior parents Cynthia and Zebulon Barnes Sr. to get their perspective on what the SCGA Junior Golf Foundation means to their family and how it has helped their son, Zebulon Jr, excel in golf and beyond.

Q: What motivated you to introduce your son to golf at such a young age?

Cynthia Barnes (C): From the very beginning, we wanted Zeb Jr. to find joy in a sport that could offer both longevity and fun. Golf seemed like the perfect fit. We started him off with miniature golf, where he had a blast. As he grew older, we enrolled him in junior golf programs. Our goal was to create a positive experience that he could enjoy for years to come.

Q: When did you first recognize Zebulon (Zeb) Jr.’s potential in golf?

Zeb Sr. (Z): I noticed his true talent when he was around eight years old. We were playing at a course called Rustic King and I recorded his swing in slow motion on my iPhone. Watching that footage, I could see how athletic and fluid his swing was. At that moment, I realized he had something special and I knew we had to nurture that potential.

Q: How has the SCGA Junior Golf Foundation influenced Zeb’s development?

Z: Once we understood what the SCGA Junior Golf Foundation offered, it was an easy decision for us to get involved. The program provided not just coaching but a whole community of support. The structure, the mentor and the resources made a huge difference for Zeb. It alleviated a lot of pressure on us as parents, allowing us to focus on enjoying his journey rather than stressing about it.

C: The emphasis on community was key. We felt welcomed from day one and it has been wonderful to see Zeb thrive in such a nurturing environment.

Q: Can you share a memorable moment from Zeb’s journey with the SCGA Junior Golf Foundation ?

C: One standout moment was when Zeb scored one-under par at an SCGA Junior tournament. I was so nervous throughout the round, counting down his score in my head. When we reached the 18th hole, I told him he was one under and the look on his face was priceless. It was a culmination of hard work, and seeing his excitement was a joy I’ll never forget.

Q: How has the SCGA Junior Golf Foundation helped Zeb transition back into competitive golf?

C: The player development program has been phenomenal. Zeb was able to progress through levels systematically, developing essential skills along the way. It prepares kids for what they’ll face in high school and college golf. The way the Foundation breaks down the development process by numbers is incredibly effective; it ensures that kids are ready for the next step.

Q: What do you appreciate most about the SCGA Junior Golf Foundation community?

Z: The friendships Zeb has formed through SCGA Junior are invaluable. The sense of community is palpable; it’s a nurturing environment that supports kids from start to finish. As some of his peers move on to college, it’s bittersweet because they’re leaving a wonderful environment but are also excited for their futures. The lasting connections they’ve made will benefit them for years to come.

Q: Can you elaborate on the impact of mentorship and networking within the Foundation?

C: Absolutely. Zeb has had the chance to meet company executives and mentors through various events, which has been enriching for him. The charitable events and mentor days allow him to see how successful individuals operate. It’s about more than just golf; it’s about building a network and developing life skills that will serve him well in the future.

Q: How do you see Zeb’s future in golf?

Z: We are incredibly excited about his continued growth. Zeb has developed a passion not only for playing but also for giving back. He enjoys helping younger kids learn the game and appreciates the importance of community support. It’s about extending that olive branch—what can you do for others while pursuing your own passion?

C: Exactly. We hope that through the Foundation, Zeb will continue to thrive, inspire others and carry forward the values he’s learned along the way. The experiences he’s had are shaping him into a responsible and caring individual, which is what we, as parents, truly hope for.

Q: Anything else you’d like to share?

C: I’d just share that Donor’s support can truly change lives. Investing in the Foundation not only helps individual golfers like Zeb but also fosters a community that nurtures joy, friendship and growth. It’s an opportunity to give more kids access to a sport that teaches them valuable life lessons, teamwork and perseverance.

Z: I would also emphasize that while the impact of donations may not be immediately visible, but these kids are tomorrow’s leaders and your contributions will help them develop into well-rounded individuals.
